Grammar Rules!: For Students, Parents, & Teachers

This comprehensive book provides 40 units filled with lessons and practices. Each of the 40 units is divided into 4 sections:
Parts of Speech - Students learn to recognize parts of speech through writing and analysis.
Mechanics - Rules and common errors associated with each part of speech are explained. This section reinforces student's understanding of the previous section, and addresses mistakes most often made by students in writing tests, such as the SAT.
Diagramming - Teaches students the structure of language and the relationships among words, phrases, and clauses, while building on what was taught in the previous sections.
Proofreading - Teaches students to examine their work carefully for errors. This section also provides practice in recognizing and eliminating slang, cliches, redundancies, and wordiness.
Also included in this book are sections on Review, Skill Check, Glossary, Diagramming Patterns, and an Answer Key.

About the Author

Mary Schatz graduated with a B.A. in philosophy from St. Lawrence University. She attended Boston University where she received a M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy which she has taught for over 26 years. In addition to teaching, she has been an English and writing tutor.

Mary's tutoring and writing about grammar grew out of her frustration with correcting student papers. The papers were full of grammatical errors. When she pointed out that a sentence was a fragment because it lacked a verb, the usual response was, "What's a verb?"

And so began Mary's second vocation as a tutor and third as a writer.

Reviews

The author doesn't explain the lessons well enough for a basic understanding of the concepts making the exercises frustrating. We check the answers in the back of the book in an attempt to understand better but to no avail. The author isn't consistent.

I am so happy to have found this book. It makes grammar fun and easy. The lessons are short yet through, goal oriented and child friendly. The parts of speech are covered well and there is frequent review.

My only compliant is that the answer key is bound in the book. I would prefer setting it aside. Overall it is a very strong option for grammar.

I really enjoy this book. It is very helpful when reviewing and in teaching my grand daughter basic grammar and writing skills.

This is a great book. I bought this for my daughters, 12 and 13 yrs old, whom we homeschool. It's a great review.
What I like about it is that it's not exhausting for them. The directions are easy to understand.
They can do the work on their own.
